The Meal Plan
We have changed the way you eat and drink at the University of Leicester. Gone are the days of being told when and where you should eat breakfast, lunch and dinner while in university accommodation. Why should we tell you what time YOU should be eating? At the end of the day, only you know when you want to eat.
The Meal Plan only applies to specific types of accommodation, this is because a small amount of university accommodation only have small kitchenettes and not the full capacity of a self-catered accommodation kitchen.
That being said, if you are in catered accommodation, you will automatically be placed on the Meal Plan and we will set up a Upay Chilli account for you.
What are the benefits of the Meal Plan?
1.No need to worry about a weekly food shop or preparing meals after a long day of lectures.
2.Learn a valuable life skill of budgeting and manage your money throughout each term.
3.Gain access to offers and promotions.
4.Eat delicious food on campus made by our award winning chefs. You are not restricted to eat certain meal or in certain outlets!

7.Plan your day however you want. Whether you’re on campus or in Oadby Student Village.
8.Top up your account with extra money whenever you need to.
9.Manage your meals in a way that suits you. Prefer a big breakfast or a light salad for lunch? Its up to you how you spend your allowance.
10.You’re in control. Any money left in your account rolls over into the next day, week, month, term and even the next academic year, meaning you don’t lose a penny.
How does it work?
A portion of the Accommodation fees you pay is allocated to the Meal Plan account. You will receive your food allowance in three installments in line with the start of each term.
You will receive specific communication on how to gain access to your Upay Chilli account, how to pay, view and top up your account before you first arrive at the university. We will set up a Upay Chilli account for you.
You will gain valuable experience in how to budget to make your money last, but if you do run out you’ll still have the option of adding money to your account.
It’s easy for you to keep track of the money you spend with the Meal Plan app, Upay Chilli. You can pay in our food and retail outlets at the university using your smartphone and/or your University ID card so you never have to worry about carrying cash around.
You can view your balance, loyalty points and keep up to date with the latest offers.
Where can I use the Meal Plan
You can use the Meal Plan in any of our outlets with the exception to the O2 Academy. This includes all of our outlets on campus, and in Oadby Student Village. You can use it to purchase main meals, snacks and hot and cold drinks and more. The only exclusion is alcohol and cigarettes!
If you’re not sure what to have to eat, have a look at our Outlet pages and use the filters to help make your selection!
How do I budget the Meal Plan?
You are in control of how you spend your money. The Meal Plan offers you the flexibility to budget your allowance in a way that suits you. You can pick which meals you spend your allowance on.
Prices of food and drink are the same for everyone, whether living in catered or self-catered accommodation, so you can all eat together and in the same outlets equally.
You can also adjust your daily spend depending on when you will be here in Leicester. We are giving you the chance to budget your spend around your own calendar so you won’t lose out!
What if I have money left at the end of the term?
Our roll over system means that you never lose any money with the Meal Plan; if you have any money left over it will remain in your account until you spend it. That means any money left on your account will roll over into the next day, next week, next month, next term and even next academic year.
It’s your money, you choose when you spent it!
What if I run out of money?
If you get to the final week of term (or anywhere in between) and don’t quite have enough money, don’t panic! You can top up your account yourself through the app. All you need to do is link your account to your debit card through the app and top up the amount you wish to.
Can I cook my own food even if I'm on the Meal Plan?
All accommodation sites with the Meal Plan included have small kitchenettes fitted with combi-ovens or microwaves and cupboard space, meaning that you also have the option to prepare simple meals and snacks.
How much does an average meal cost?
We have a variety of meals to suit every budget, it’s up to you how to spend it! You can get a hot breakfast bagel at IXXY’s from £1.00, grab yourself a sandwich meal deal from £2.50 or you could get a hot meal in Chi for £4.95. There are so many options that you will always be able to find something to suit your daily budget.
What if I have a special diet?
All of our outlets cater to vegetarian and gluten free diets (we were the first University to receive the Coeliac UK Accreditation!) This website allows you to search through all of our menus depending on your dietary requirements- have a look at the Outlet pages for more information.
We also have allergen information in each outlet for all our dishes made in-house, just ask the staff for help.
Do you have other dietary requirements that you would like to discuss with us? Send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will be in touch.
Can I opt out of the Meal Plan?
If you are in catered accommodation, your catering and residence agreement is connected, so we are unable to separate these. If you are having trouble with the Meal Plan or struggling to budget, drop us an email at email@example.com and we will give you some help!
How can I give feedback on the Meal Plan?
Drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org or get in touch via our social media pages! Whatever your feedback is, we would love to hear it! Also keep a look out on our social media pages for surveys and questions – they often involve the chance to win a prize!
I'm thinking about going into self-catered accommodation, can I opt into the Meal Plan?
Because the Meal Plan only applies to specific types of accommodation, if you are in self-catered or private accommodation you cannot opt in to the Meal Plan. You can however use the app in the same way to purchase food and drink, receive loyalty points every time you spend over £1 per transactions, view offers and promotions, top-up and more. Visit our Upay Chilli app page to find out more and how to sign up.
